Experiential learning is the most effective way for adults to learn. This has been demonstrated with multiple research studies and everyday life.
Physically engaging our bodies and actively doing something is the fastest way for us to learn a new skill. It also has the highest retention rating of close to 90%. It is a great way to learn.
Experiential learning is what we do when we are coaching with horses. We go into their environment and slow everything down. We become present and aware of what’s going on in our bodies, thoughts and feelings. We are participating in the world of the horse, with the horse. They are mirroring what we are thinking and feeling, sometimes even before we’re aware of it.
Experiential learning is the embodiment of learning. It is learning deeply within our bodies, through our senses, movement and muscle memory. It enables us to fully experience the world and experience new learning environments. It is a powerful way for us to engage with the horses. We start cultivating skills they have including
- reading energy
- being more aware of our environment
- being aware of what’s going on within ourselves.
That embodied learning creates opportunities for us to look at things and shift the things that aren’t working for us. These are the reasons I love embodied learning or experiential learning.
